Originally executed as a workroom and laundry for domestic help, this space inside of a Frank Lloyd Wright designed residence had suffered awkward counter and appliance replacements as well as general neglect. Strategically, we chose to enhance the spatial integrity of the Usonian space by removing all cabinetry from the exterior walls, exposing the characteristically strong, horizontal masonry, strip windows, and soffit banding. Cabinetry detailing derived from the original cabinets and furnishings responds to Wright’s use of a 4’-0” x 4’-0” planning module evidenced in the terrazzo floor grid. Piano hinges and brass pulls were salvaged. Matching cypress wood was carefully aniline-dyed and finished. Upper glass doors duplicate the casement window sash and extend the ‘view’. The entire space takes on an honest and robust utilitarian aura that resides comfortably in this iconic home. Besides, Wright would have loved the red knobs!
